Larry Bird Statue, Terre Haute, IN
If anyone knows me, they know that one of the things I love to do is check out places where people originate from...you know, where they are born, grew up, went to college, etc... I love that I came across this statue of one of the greatest basketball players of all time...Larry Bird!
They were doing work on the building behind otherwise the pic would have been much better, but it didn't take away of the amazingness that is this memorial. If you ever felt short before, you certainly will now!
This statue depicts college basketball and NBA star Larry Bird shooting a basket towards the intersection. In 2013, Indiana State University unveiled a 17 foot, 1,900 lb statue of Larry Bird and named a scholarship after him. It was designed taller than rival Magic Johnson's Michigan State statue.
In 1975, Bird enrolled at Indiana State where he embarked on an amazing three year run with the Sycamores. Bird averaged 30.3 points, 13.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists for his career and earned numerous awards. Bird led the Indiana State team to the 1979 NCAA tournament championship game where Larry and the Sycamores would lose to Magic Johnson and Michigan State. After the game, Larry Bird became a household name.
The Celtics drafted him six overall in the 1978 NBA draft and the rest is history.
