Vase in Place....Vasehenge

Who has always wanted to see Stonehenge, but just can't seem to hitch that ride to England just yet? Temporary fix...I bring you Vasehenge!

On our Summer Road Trip heading west, this was our first Roadside Attraction stop. Located in Zanesville, OH (the former pottery capital of the United States) sits 18 decorative vases (and 2 empty pedestals) in a circle measuring 6 ft tall each with a 60 ft diameter.

The "Clay City" was home of many prized pottery companies, including Weller Pottery. Weller employed 1,500 worker which makes it Zanesville's largest employer.

So, what is the story behind Vasehenge? Originally named "Vase in Place" (Vasehenge was a nickname created by locals) these vases were created by a group of artists during a community project in the mid-2,000's. 100 oversized vases were made and local artists put their brushes to the task of creating works of art for their city! Each vase stands taller than the average human and is painted with different themes. In 2008, 20 of these vases mimicking Stonehenge, were placed in this area while the 80 others can be seen throughout the city.

Isn't this one beautiful?

How about this one? We didn't know what kinds of themes we would come across as they were all so random, which makes these vases even more intriguing! Each individual artist had their own ideas of what they wanted to show the world. It all came together just beautifully.

We did notice that the pieces are in need of some updating. There is some chipping, fading, and 2 are completely missing (maybe vandalized?)

You had the vases with 1 large cohesive theme...and then you had ones like these. I glanced all around this one and found various paintings.

Located at the west side of the Y bridge, it is surprisingly serene to walk among these vases...

Snap photos...

Just take it all in....

It's FREE! Why not check it out if you are over that way.
