Birthplace of the Coca-Cola Bottle, Terre Haute, IN

Image
Some of the most famous things in the world have to have been created somewhere. So, what is Terre Haute, IN famous for? The birthplace of the Coca-Cola bottle!  In the year 1915, the Coca Cola Company sent out a challenge across the US to design a distinct bottle to house their product. The Root Glass Company in Terre Haute, IN had the winning design thus making their city the birthplace. We found the location of the Root Glass Company. Just a marker here now.  If you want to have some fun throughout Terre Haute, visit the The Coke Bottle Sculpture Project. The 6-foot-tall Coke Bottle sculptures throughout the city show how proud this area is of what they brought to the world. The sculpture is part of the Root Family Public Art Project. I found this example of one of  their bottle sculptures online.  Print a map of the bottles here and have some fun with the family! https://www.thehaute.org/birthplace-of-the-coca-cola-bottle Don't forget to check out the fun mu...

Square Donuts, Terre Haute, IN

Image
When on our adventures, we LOVE to find the diamonds in the rough, things that are unique and they are even more exciting when we find where it all began!!!  Introducing...Square Donuts! It all began in the city of Terre Haute back in 1967. These people know just how much you lose when you "cut corners" which is when they came up with their slogan "Never Cut Corners". 3 generations of square donuts have enticed the donut lover, but it is beyond the shape...it is the taste! Light and fluffy makes all the difference!  We got a mixed box. Mine is stuffed, with strawberry frosting!  Seeing is only the beginning...be sure to grab one up and have a bite! The taste, not the shape, will have you coming back!  Located at Wabash Avenue Terre Haute, Indiana (this one is open longer in the day) CASH ONLY Read all about them here:  http://www.squaredonuts.com/index.html Curiosity continues.... ~~Dede~~

Larry Bird Statue, Terre Haute, IN

Image
If anyone knows me, they know that one of the things I love to do is check out places where people originate from...you know, where they are born, grew up, went to college, etc... I love that I came across this statue of one of the greatest basketball players of all time...Larry Bird! They were doing work on the building behind otherwise the pic would have been much better, but it didn't take away of the amazingness that is this memorial. If you ever felt short before, you certainly will now!  This statue depicts college basketball and NBA star Larry Bird shooting a basket towards the intersection. In 2013, Indiana State University unveiled a 17 foot, 1,900 lb statue of Larry Bird and named a scholarship after him. It was designed taller than rival Magic Johnson's Michigan State statue.  In 1975, Bird enrolled at Indiana State where he embarked on an amazing three year run with the Sycamores. Bird averaged 30.3 points, 13.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists for his career and ea...

Old Gas Station/Garage House, Terre Haute, IN

Image
When my husband and I were planning our summer road trip in the midst of the pandemic, we were having a hard time finding any fun out and about. Water parks were closed, theme parks..closed. Even hotels were for essential workers at the time. So, what would any mom of 8 do in this situation? Find the fun where you can! My first thought to myself was, "Wonder if there are any places out there that you can stay where the stay itself is a ton of fun?" I immediately went to "Home Away" to see what I could rustle up that wouldn't break the bank. That is when I came across this place.... First look at this place and we knew we needed to stay here!!! I mean, besides the fact that it was once an old filling station and garage, what other place to stay has their own mascot: The owner was very good about including photos of some of the fun, but left some for that element of surprise. We didn't expect to see this when we pulled up... From the second we pulled onto th...

World's Largest Candle, Centerville, IN

Image
This roadside attraction was another one that was hard to miss! While driving along I-70, you can see this one in enough time to take the exit and check it out. The gigantic candle sitting outside serves to stir curiosity, but is also a preview of what is housed inside.   Located at the Warm Glow Candle Co Outlet in Centerville, IN is what is being considered the World's Largest Candle. Although I cannot find measurements anywhere, it is most definitely HUGE!!! Though not real, it is a cool photo op in the day, lights up at night and is a beautiful display of what the real ones are like inside the building that are available for purchase.  Wow!!!  Alan & Jackie Carberry created Warm Glow Candle Company in the basement of their home in 1994. Their goal was to create their vision of a perfect candle. After many tedious months of working with several combinations, they finally accomplished their goal and succeeded in creating a candle that is highly fragrant, l...

Big Cross, Richmond, IN

Image
This one was on my list to see, but trust me, there is no need to even seek it out as it found us!!!  Positioned for I-70 appreciation, it is located on the property of New Creations Ministries which is a boarding school for troubled teens, church and bible college.  Entitled "The Miracle Cross" it was installed Spring 2010. It is a 100 ft tall Christian cross made of corrugated steel over a metal frame. Wow! Just look at that!  The thought was that the cross "Will give hope, direction, light from above and encouragement" to all those people traveling Interstate 70 and passing New Creation's Chapel. New Creations ceased operations in July 2016, but the cross still stands tall for all to see.  More of the property... This carved figurine of Jesus and some children are there, I would assume as part of the boarding school for troubled teens that was once located here.  Free to see. Located at 6400 National Road East in Richmond, IN, but clearly visible at the inter...
